The Lufthansa has confirmed that an Academy Award statuette belonging to filmmaker Pavel Talankine was recovered after being temporarily misplaced during a flight from New York to Frankfurt.

The incident occurred when Talankine, who recently gained international recognition for his documentary Mr Nobody Against Putin, was traveling from John F. Kennedy International Airport to Germany. Security officials reportedly prevented him from carrying the Oscar statuette in the aircraft cabin, citing safety regulations.

According to reports, the Transportation Security Administration classified the award as a potential security risk, leading to its placement in checked luggage instead of being kept onboard with the passenger.

However, upon arrival in Frankfurt, the statuette was discovered to be missing, prompting concern and an internal investigation. Lufthansa later confirmed that the Oscar had been located and was in its possession at the airport.

The airline stated that it was coordinating directly with the filmmaker to ensure the safe and prompt return of the award. Officials emphasized that efforts were underway to personally hand over the statuette to its owner.

Talankine’s documentary, co-produced with American filmmaker David Borenstein, gained international attention after winning an Academy Award for best documentary feature. The film uses secretly recorded footage from inside Russia to examine the introduction of patriotic education programs in schools during the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The filmmaker expressed surprise over the security decision, noting that he had previously traveled multiple times with the statuette without issue. He questioned why an Oscar would be considered a security threat, highlighting inconsistencies in airport screening procedures.

The case has sparked discussion about airport security protocols and how symbolic cultural objects are treated during international travel.
