French President Emmanuel Macron has strongly condemned Russia’s use of the Orechnik intermediate-range ballistic missile, describing it as a sign of “escalation” and strategic deadlock in the ongoing war in Ukraine.

According to Russian authorities, the missile was used during a series of overnight strikes. However, Ukrainian and Western officials have accused Moscow of targeting civilian infrastructure, while Russia claims it only struck military objectives.

The Orechnik missile, which is capable of carrying a nuclear warhead, has raised renewed concerns among international observers about the intensification of the conflict and the risks of further destabilization in the region.

In a statement shared on social media platform X, Macron said the deployment of such weapons reflects a “dangerous escalation” and illustrates what he described as the “impasse” of Russia’s war strategy. He also reiterated concerns about the growing impact of the conflict on civilians in Ukraine.

The incident comes amid continued fighting and repeated missile exchanges, with diplomatic efforts remaining stalled despite international calls for de-escalation and negotiations.

Western allies have repeatedly warned against further escalation involving advanced missile systems, stressing the need to protect civilian populations and prevent the widening of the conflict.
