French President Emmanuel Macron has denounced Israel's proposed expansion into Gaza as a "grave and unprecedented disaster" and called for an immediate, permanent ceasefire. Speaking to BFMTV on Monday, August 11, Macron criticized the Israeli cabinet’s recent announcement of a military expansion into Gaza City and the surrounding areas, including Mawasi camps. He warned that such actions would exacerbate the ongoing crisis, with civilians and hostages bearing the brunt of the violence.

Macron proposes UN stabilization mission

To address the conflict, Macron proposed deploying a UN-mandated stabilization mission in Gaza. This initiative, he explained, would aim to secure the region, protect civilians, and support a Palestinian governance structure capable of addressing local needs. The plan would also include efforts to demilitarize Hamas, ensuring long-term stability.

"The only viable path forward involves ensuring Israel's security, freeing hostages, resuming humanitarian efforts, and supporting the Palestinian population," Macron asserted.

Rejecting unilateral military action

The French president firmly opposed an Israeli military operation, advocating instead for an international coalition under UN supervision. He emphasized the need for a collective response to counter terrorism, stabilize Gaza, and establish a governance framework that promotes peace and security.

Macron urged the UN Security Council to act swiftly, stressing the importance of granting the stabilization mission a robust mandate. "My team has already begun coordinating with our partners. This is the only credible solution to end the unacceptable suffering of hostages and Gaza's civilians. It is also the only way to break the cycle of perpetual war and rebuild peace and security for all," he concluded.
