Major tin deposit discovered near Meknès, Morocco
A significant geological discovery has emerged in the Meknès region, unveiling a tin deposit estimated at over 39 million tons. This site, located at the heart of the Achmach mining project, has captured the attention of international experts and could reposition Morocco on the global stage of strategic resources, as reported by L’Economiste on April 4.
Tin, a valuable non-ferrous metal, is essential in various industries, particularly electronics. Its electrical conductivity makes it a key component in the production of solder for printed circuits. Additionally, it is used in food packaging, metal alloys such as bronze, and in glass manufacturing processes.
The deposit is being exploited by the Australian company Atlantic Tin Ltd, which is conducting advanced exploration operations at the site. Utilizing modern techniques, the company has revised its initial estimates, expanding drilling zones, notably at Sidi Addi. Eighteen new diamond drill holes have identified substantial additional resources, enhancing the overall outlook of the project.
According to Simon Milroy, CEO of Atlantic Tin, "This increase in resources strengthens the foundation of our combined feasibility study for the Achmach and Samine sites. A new reserve estimate will be published as technical studies progress." He also noted that the company favors underground mining using modern techniques such as mechanized blasting, allowing for controlled and more efficient ore extraction.
This discovery occurs amid a global surge in demand for tin, driven by the rapid growth of high-tech industries, electronics, automotive, and embedded technologies. With this deposit, Morocco could play a major role in the global tin supply chain.
However, beyond the raw potential, transforming this resource into sustainable wealth will depend on several factors: attractiveness to investors, local skill development, and the implementation of ambitious public policies. Investment in research, innovation, advanced technologies, and human capital training will be essential to fully capitalize on this opportunity.
This deposit could represent a turning point in national mining strategy, offering Morocco a unique chance to strengthen its position in critical raw materials while fostering diversified and sustainable economic growth.
