Mali has formally lodged a complaint against Algeria at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), accusing its neighbor of shooting down a Malian army reconnaissance drone in early April within Malian territory. The incident has further strained relations between the two countries, which have faced growing diplomatic tensions in recent years.

In a statement issued Thursday, Malian authorities denounced the downing of the drone as “an act of aggression” and “a hostile gesture” that violated both Malian sovereignty and international law. According to Bamako, the drone was conducting operations within Malian airspace when it was destroyed on April 1.

Algeria, however, rejected the accusations, claiming that radar evidence from its defense ministry showed the drone had crossed into Algerian airspace. The disagreement quickly escalated into a full-blown diplomatic standoff, with both countries recalling their ambassadors and subsequently closing their airspace to one another.

Mali said it had repeatedly requested Algeria to provide proof of the alleged airspace violation but received no response. Adding to the tension, Bamako accused Algeria of supporting terrorist groups operating along the Mali-Algeria border, a charge Algiers has denied.

Diplomatic fallout and historical context

The drone dispute marks the latest flashpoint in a deteriorating relationship between the two nations. Earlier this year, Mali’s ruling junta announced its withdrawal from the 2015 Algiers Peace Agreement, a framework that Algeria had brokered to stabilize northern Mali. The termination of the accord further underscored the growing mistrust between Bamako and Algiers.

The situation is exacerbated by Mali’s ongoing security crisis, which has been fueled by insurgencies linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State, as well as widespread criminal and communal violence. Mali has accused Algeria of pursuing a destabilizing agenda in the Sahel region, which includes interference in neighboring Burkina Faso and Niger.

Broader regional implications

The dispute unfolds against a backdrop of shifting alliances and rivalries in the Sahel. Algeria’s recent attempts to assert its influence in Africa, including through proposed trade corridors for landlocked Sahel countries, have been met with skepticism. Meanwhile, Morocco has steadily gained international momentum, particularly regarding its position on the Sahara dispute, further isolating Algeria on multiple fronts.

As Mali turns to the ICJ for resolution, the case underscores the deepening divisions in the region and the challenges of achieving stability in the Sahel. For now, the diplomatic rift between Mali and Algeria shows no signs of easing, with both sides entrenched in their positions.
