Man arrested over suspected arson attacks targeting prime minister's properties
A 21-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a series of suspected arson attacks, including a fire at a residence owned by British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed the arrest, stating the suspect was taken into custody early Tuesday on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. He remains in police custody as investigations continue.
Emergency services responded to two separate fires within 24 hours at properties in north London, both linked to Sir Keir. The first occurred just after 1:35 a.m. on Monday in Kentish Town, and the second took place on Sunday in Islington. Authorities are also reviewing a vehicle fire from the previous Thursday on the same Kentish Town street to determine any connection.
Parts of the affected areas were cordoned off as officers and fire investigators from the London Fire Brigade examined the scenes.
The Kentish Town property, believed to still be owned by the Prime Minister, suffered damage to its entrance. No injuries were reported. Sir Keir previously lived at the residence before moving to 10 Downing Street after Labour's electoral victory. The home is reportedly being rented out.
A smaller fire was reported early Sunday at the entrance of a house converted into flats in Islington, also associated with the Prime Minister.
Due to the property's connection to a high-profile figure, the Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command is leading the investigation. All three incidents are currently being treated as suspicious.
A government spokesperson said the Prime Minister expressed gratitude to emergency responders and could not comment further due to the ongoing investigation.
Shadow justice secretary Robert Jenrick condemned the attacks, stating: “It is essential that the Prime Minister and others in public life have their homes and families protected. These actions are disgraceful and unacceptable.”
