Maroc Telecom: Abdeslam Ahizoune departs, Mohamed Benchaâboune expected to take over

Abdeslam Ahizoune, the outgoing chairman of Maroc Telecom's management board, has seen his tenure come to an end. His departure was formalized during a meeting of the company's supervisory board, as confirmed by reliable sources. Mohamed Benchaâboun, the current director general of the Mohammed VI Investment Fund, is poised to succeed him.

The decision to replace Ahizoune was first reported by Al Ousboue, revealing that the supervisory board of Maroc Telecom (Itissalat Al-Maghrib, IAM) has terminated Ahizoune's mandate as chairman of the management board. This move comes after months of anticipation and amid a series of costly conflicts that have resulted in significant financial losses for the historic operator.

Ahizoune, a divisive figure in Morocco's entrepreneurial landscape, leaves behind a mixed legacy marked by recurrent anti-competitive practices. Throughout his tenure, his actions have been detrimental to both the image and financial health of the operator, as well as to the growth of Morocco's telecommunications sector.

Mohamed Benchaâboun, known for his dialogue, consensus-building skills, and innovation focus, is expected to bring a fresh perspective to Maroc Telecom. His appointment is seen as a strategic choice, given his extensive experience in economics and finance, including his former roles as Minister of Economy and Finance and head of the National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency (ANRT).

Ahizoune's 26-year reign at Maroc Telecom was characterized by a desperate defense of the company's monopolistic position and numerous regulatory infractions. His dismissal paves the way for a new era of growth and fair competition among Morocco's telecommunications operators.

As Morocco prepares to host major continental and global events, the telecommunications sector is poised for a brighter future, leaving behind the conflicts and controversies that have hindered its progress.
