Mexico: Drones attack judicial buildings in border city of Tijuana
Judicial buildings in the Mexican border city of Tijuana, a key crossing point to the United States and a strategic location for drug trafficking, were attacked with drones, the state prosecutor of Baja California announced Thursday.
The drones dropped explosives made with nails, beads, and metal, causing only material damage, said María Elena Andrade, Tijuana’s prosecutor. Earlier in the day, the U.S. consulate in Tijuana reported explosions in the area and advised its citizens to stay away.
“This sounded like gunfire,” Andrade explained, referring to the explosives dropped by the drones. In recent months, criminal organizations in Mexico have increasingly used drones to target rivals or authorities. The powerful Jalisco Nueva Generación cartel (CJNG) has operated such drones since at least 2020, even maintaining a division dedicated to deploying homemade explosives from drones, according to an Insight Crime report.
