At least 23 people, including several minors, were killed in a powerful explosion that struck a discount supermarket in Hermosillo, the capital of the northern Mexican state of Sonora, local authorities confirmed on Saturday.

According to Governor Alfonso Durazo, eleven others were injured and are currently receiving treatment in nearby hospitals. “Sadly, some of the victims are minors,” Durazo said in a video shared on social media. “I have ordered a full and transparent investigation to determine the causes of the incident and any potential responsibilities.”

The blast occurred inside a Waldo’s store located in downtown Hermosillo. Preliminary findings suggest that the explosion was accidental, possibly caused by a malfunctioning electrical transformer, according to the Sonora Attorney General’s Office.

“The working hypothesis is that the event was accidental,” the office stated on X (formerly Twitter). Firefighters and forensic teams are continuing to examine the scene, and authorities have ruled out the possibility of an attack.

Local officials have pledged to provide assistance to victims’ families while urging residents to avoid spreading misinformation as the investigation continues.
