Migrant boat capsizes off Mauritania: 49 dead, hundreds missing
At least 49 people have died and around a hundred are missing more than 48 hours after a boat carrying migrants capsized off the coast of Mauritania, authorities reported Friday.
The vessel, a small wooden boat, went down on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday with 160 people on board, according to the Mauritanian Coast Guard and Gendarmerie. Rescue efforts are ongoing, but rough sea conditions and the lack of life-saving equipment on board have severely hindered operations.
