The Ministry of Islamic Affairs and Endowments has clarified its decision to dismiss the head of the local religious council in Figuig, addressing widespread speculation and criticism surrounding the issue.

In a formal statement, the Ministry emphasized that the dismissal adhered to established legal and institutional procedures, dismissing some reactions to the decision as “malicious or hasty.” The Ministry reiterated that dismissals within religious councils follow strict guidelines, including court rulings, disciplinary council reports, or performance evaluations.

Grounds for dismissal

The Ministry disclosed that the dismissal of Mohamed Benali, the council head, was based on reports from the regional religious council and the Supreme Religious Council. These reports cited Benali’s repeated absences, which he admitted to during internal reviews.

Benali himself confirmed the circumstances in a Facebook post, stating, “The reason the committee focused on was my irregular attendance at the council. I do not deny this truth.” He described the dismissal as a transition from a regulated position to one without restrictions, signaling his acceptance of the decision.

Controversy over official reasons

Despite the Ministry’s explanation, some critics have linked Benali’s removal to his outspoken religious and political views, which he often shared on social media. A recent post, in which he criticized global silence over the Gaza conflict and accused scholars of complicity, sparked significant debate. Critics argue that such contentious views may have contributed to his dismissal.

Benali’s dismissal has drawn mixed reactions, with some questioning the rigor of the institutional process and others highlighting the importance of accountability in such positions. The Ministry defended its decision, asserting that appointments and dismissals of religious council leaders demand full transparency and adherence to protocol.

In its closing remarks, the Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to respecting the independence of religious institutions, concluding with a reminder that “the end of matters is up to God.”
