Moroccan Football Federation Faces Scrutiny Over Player Release Policy
National team manager Walid Regragui's recent decision allowing Achraf Hakimi to remain with Paris Saint-Germain has ignited questions about Morocco's approach to player availability. Hakimi, who participated in PSG's Trophée des Champions match, was granted special permission, prompting criticism from Spanish newspapers regarding a perceived double standard. This decision stands in contrast to the handling of La Liga stars, who were required to join the Atlas Lions immediately for the African Cup of Nations.
In particular, the actions of Regragui have drawn criticism for not extending the same courtesy to clubs in the Spanish top flight. Sevilla and Valencia, in particular, fervently advocated for retaining Youssef En-Nesyri and Selim Amallah until the last possible moment to make them available for their respective league fixtures this week.
The absence of key Moroccan players like En-Nesyri, Amallah, Ez Abde, and Chadi Riad has had a tangible impact on teams such as Sevilla, Valencia, Real Betis, and Alavés. Manuel Pellegrini, in particular, faced challenges with a depleted defense for Betis following the international call-ups. Notably, Alavés suffered a setback with the absence of pivotal center-back Abdel Abqar against Real Sociedad.
As Morocco gears up to host the AFCON, there is increasing scrutiny on the federation's consistency and communication with European clubs. Regragui faces the delicate task of addressing concerns about favoritism while simultaneously meeting the needs of the national team. Striking the right balance is crucial to maintaining positive relations within the global football community. The Moroccan federation's ability to navigate these challenges will be closely observed as it prepares for the upcoming tournament.
