Moroccan youth, especially Generation Z, are transforming the country’s political landscape through innovative forms of engagement, blending street protests with the power of social media. Despite their disillusionment with traditional politics, this generation’s drive for change is gaining momentum and reshaping civic participation.

Rising discontent with traditional politics

Distrust in elected institutions has grown, with a striking 70% of Moroccan youth expressing dissatisfaction. Many young Moroccans view the political system as monopolized by elites prioritizing personal interests over collective welfare. This disillusionment is exacerbated by rural exploitation under the guise of charity and religion, leaving many young voices unheard.

Social media as a political tool

Social media platforms have become vital for mobilizing and organizing protests. From viral hashtags demanding accountability to Facebook and Instagram campaigns advocating reforms, Moroccan Gen Z is leveraging digital tools to amplify their voices. Platforms like Discord are frequently used for discussions and coordination of demonstrations, while podcasts featuring figures like economist Omar Belafrij and political analyst Talal Lahlou provide a platform for deeper conversations.

Tangible impact and challenges ahead

Youth-led movements are starting to yield tangible results. Recent protests have compelled authorities to address public health issues, prompting swift action by Health Minister Ahmad Tahraoui. His investigations into the failing healthcare system, including the severe deficiencies at Hassan II Regional Hospital in Agadir, led to the dismissal of senior officials and critical policy reviews.

However, challenges persist. Political disengagement remains high, with many young people skeptical about the impact of elections and the prevalence of corruption. Generational divides further complicate progress, as older leaders resist change while younger activists reject conventional methods. His Majesty King Mohammed VI aptly described Morocco’s current state as moving at “two speeds.”

A future shaped by youth

Despite these hurdles, Moroccan Gen Z is redefining political participation. Their determination, coupled with creative approaches to activism, signals the potential for a more inclusive and accountable political system. If their efforts are supported and given a platform, this generation could usher in a new era of reform and civic empowerment in Morocco.
