Moroccan rapper Draganov’s latest music video Tach has sparked widespread reactions across North Africa, blending praise with controversy. Released just a week ago, the video has already amassed over 6 million views on YouTube, drawing attention for its artistic elements and cultural impact.

Viral success meets criticism

While Tach has been celebrated by fans in Morocco, Algeria, and France for its vibrant mix of rap and rai, an Algerian-rooted music genre popular in Draganov’s hometown of Oujda, the video has also faced backlash in Algeria.

The controversy stems from a scene featuring Algerian comedian Mohammed Khassani dancing in front of Draganov, who sits atop a stack of chairs. While Draganov frequently incorporates chairs into his videos as an artistic motif, some Algerians interpreted the imagery as humiliating, perceiving Khassani’s role as subservient.

Critics called the scene a symbolic act of dominance, sparking heated discussions online. On the other hand, many viewers welcomed the collaboration as a message of unity between the neighboring countries.

Divided opinions on social media

Algerian journalist and political analyst Oualid Kebir praised the collaboration, expressing support for the artists. “Shoutout to Draganov and Khassani. Much love to Oujdan and Oranian people,” he wrote on X, dismissing the controversy with humor.

However, not all reactions were positive. On Instagram, some users harshly criticized Khassani, accusing him of tarnishing Algeria’s image. One commenter remarked, “You’ve become a dancer for the Moroccans. You really disgraced us.”

Draganov’s response

Addressing the criticism, Draganov released a video on social media emphasizing the shared cultural and musical heritage between Moroccans and Algerians. He urged fans to view the video as a celebration of unity, not division.

Artistic and cultural impact

The song Tach explores themes of resilience, loyalty, and finding joy amid life’s challenges. Its fusion of rap and rai reflects the interconnectedness of Moroccan and Algerian music traditions. Despite the controversy, many fans lauded the energy and creativity of the video, which continues to gain traction online.

As debates persist, Tach has become more than a song. It is now a cultural touchpoint, underscoring both the tensions and shared bonds between Morocco and Algeria.
