Morocco has strengthened its role in global agricultural conservation efforts after a collection of Moroccan crop seeds was deposited in the Svalbard Global Seed Vault in Norway, one of the world's most secure facilities dedicated to preserving plant genetic resources for future generations.

Located deep inside a mountain on the remote Svalbard Archipelago, approximately 1,300 kilometers from the North Pole, the vault provides naturally cold conditions and permanent permafrost that allow seeds to be safely stored for decades. Often referred to as the world's "doomsday seed vault," the facility serves as a backup repository for crop varieties from across the globe, protecting them against natural disasters, conflicts, and the growing impacts of climate change.

The Moroccan seed collection was delivered during the vault's latest deposit cycle in June, contributing to a growing international effort to safeguard agricultural biodiversity. The addition helped increase the facility's holdings to more than 1.4 million seed samples, representing thousands of crop varieties preserved by countries and research institutions worldwide.

Morocco's contribution was coordinated through the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA), which manages an important gene bank in the country. The organization focuses on collecting, conserving, and improving crop varieties that are particularly well adapted to arid and semi-arid environments.

The shipment included 1,172 seed samples stored in four containers and covered around 30 different plant species. Among the collection were hundreds of chickpea and lentil varieties, as well as several cereal crops known for their resilience to drought and water scarcity.

Researchers consider Morocco's traditional crop varieties especially valuable because many possess genetic traits that improve tolerance to harsh environmental conditions. These characteristics are becoming increasingly important as scientists seek to develop crops capable of adapting to rising temperatures, prolonged droughts, and changing weather patterns associated with global climate change.

The initiative also involved Moroccan students who participated in the seed deposit process, highlighting the importance of educating future generations about the preservation of agricultural heritage and biodiversity.

By contributing to the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, Morocco reinforces its commitment to protecting plant genetic resources while supporting international efforts to strengthen global food security. As climate challenges continue to intensify, preserving diverse crop varieties remains essential for ensuring resilient agricultural systems capable of feeding future generations.
