Morocco witnessed extraordinary scenes of unity and celebration on Friday evening as thousands of citizens took to the streets following the United Nations Security Council’s adoption of Resolution 2797, reaffirming Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as the basis of negotiations for Sahara’s future. The landmark vote, widely described as a major success for Moroccan diplomacy and territorial integrity, resonated deeply with citizens from the far north to the southern provinces.

Public squares become symbols of unity

Historic squares and streets across Morocco were illuminated by jubilant crowds waving flags, singing patriotic songs, and expressing pride in Morocco’s achievement. In Tetouan, decorated cars paraded through main squares, while the steps of Morocco’s Parliament in Rabat were filled with voices chanting the national anthem. Images and viral videos captured the spontaneous outpouring of emotion across neighborhoods and public spaces nationwide.

Southern provinces at the heart of festivities

Celebrations were particularly vibrant in Morocco’s southern provinces, including Laayoune, Dakhla, and Guerguerat, where the new resolution was seen as a direct affirmation of the region’s Moroccan identity. Residents displayed banners, flags, and portraits of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, transforming public squares into powerful displays of national pride. Local observers noted that the festive atmosphere reflects both strong grassroots support for the autonomy initiative and growing confidence in Morocco’s strategic direction.

A turning point in Morocco’s history

Resolution 2797 was adopted with 11 votes in favor, three abstentions, and Algeria opting not to participate. In a royal address broadcast shortly after the vote, His Majesty King Mohammed VI hailed the moment as a “decisive phase” in Morocco’s modern history and called on neighboring countries to embrace dialogue and regional cooperation. His Majesty emphasized that resolving the Sahara conflict requires a win-win approach that ensures lasting peace and shared prosperity.

Growing international recognition and impact

The Security Council’s endorsement of the autonomy plan marks a significant shift in the geopolitical landscape surrounding Sahara. International leaders have highlighted the credibility of Morocco’s approach, while expanding investment and development initiatives in the southern provinces point to a promising economic future. Analysts say support for Morocco’s position is steadily gaining momentum among global actors, further strengthening its standing both regionally and internationally.
