Morocco-Europe shipping route revolutionizes fresh produce logistics
European logistics company Samskip has introduced the Moroccan Reefer Service (MRS), a new weekly maritime line connecting Agadir and Casablanca directly to Thamesport in the UK and Rotterdam in the Netherlands. The service offers a faster, more sustainable alternative for transporting fresh produce from Morocco to Northern Europe.
Faster and greener logistics for Moroccan exporters
The MRS aims to support Moroccan fruit and vegetable exporters by drastically reducing transit times. Shipments from Agadir can now reach Ireland in just six days, while goods arriving in Rotterdam can be quickly distributed to other European markets, including Sweden, Norway, Finland, Poland, and the Baltic countries.
Designed as a more efficient alternative to traditional Mediterranean ferry and road routes, MRS uses 45-foot refrigerated containers to preserve product freshness while meeting European road transport standards. According to Samskip, this new route reduces CO2 emissions by up to 80% compared to full road transport, offering a greener option for exporters.
Partnership with the Moroccan Fruit Board
To strengthen the service, Samskip has entered a long-term partnership with the Moroccan Fruit Board. Ólafur Orri Ólafsson, Chief Business Officer at Samskip, described the launch as a “milestone for the supply chain between Morocco and Northern Europe.” He highlighted the company’s commitment to providing faster, greener, and more reliable logistics solutions after consultations with industry professionals.
The integration of customs formalities and inland delivery further simplifies logistics, enhancing the competitiveness of Moroccan exports in European markets.
Boosting Morocco’s export potential
The MRS solidifies Morocco’s position as a key fresh produce export hub to Europe, addressing the growing demand for efficient cold chain logistics. This direct shipping route eliminates the complexities of multi-modal transport, ensuring that time-sensitive goods, such as fruits and vegetables, maintain their quality throughout the journey.
By embracing sustainable practices and offering faster access to Northern European markets, the new initiative strengthens Morocco’s strategic role in global trade and enhances its reputation as a reliable partner in the fresh produce sector.
