Morocco and UAE bolster innovation with industrial property agreement
Morocco and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have taken a significant step to enhance their collaboration in fostering innovation and economic development by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on industrial property rights. The agreement seeks to strengthen bilateral relations and facilitate knowledge sharing between the two nations.
The signing ceremony occurred during the 66th General Assembly of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva, ongoing until July 17. Representatives from both countries, including Omar Zniber, Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, and Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, UAE Minister of Economy, were present to formalize the partnership.
The Moroccan Office of Industrial and Commercial Property (OMPIC) and the UAE’s Intellectual Property Sector will collaborate on initiatives aimed at modernizing intellectual property frameworks, supporting innovation, and aligning best practices in areas such as patents, trademarks, and industrial property protection.
During the event, both parties reviewed advancements in their respective intellectual property sectors and explored potential cooperation projects to further bolster innovation ecosystems in both nations. This partnership reflects their shared ambition of becoming regional hubs for business and innovation.
The MoU aligns with Morocco's broader economic modernization efforts, including the recent nationwide expansion of OMPIC’s electronic business creation platform. This platform aims to streamline administrative procedures for entities like the Ministry of Justice, the General Directorate of Taxes (DGI), and the National Security Fund (CNSS).
As both nations continue to develop their intellectual property systems, this agreement underscores a commitment to fostering economic growth and innovation on a regional and global scale.
