Morocco has implemented a comprehensive strategy to combat extremism by promoting education, cultural understanding, and religious moderation, according to Ahmed Abbadi, Secretary-General of the Mohammed VI League of Scholars. Speaking to the Italian newspaper Ius101, Abbadi outlined how Morocco’s approach, guided by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, emphasizes values and education over rigid religious rules.

A balanced approach to religion and society

The Moroccan model helps society navigate the complexities of modern life by fostering a thoughtful interpretation of religion. It rejects extremist ideologies rooted in narrow, rule-based approaches. Instead, it uses education in families, schools, communities, and media platforms to promote critical thinking and shared values.

Innovative educational tools, such as games designed to teach children moral lessons naturally, are a cornerstone of this effort. Abbadi highlighted that this strategy adapts to Morocco’s diverse social and cultural realities, ensuring inclusivity and respect for differences.

He emphasized that the Quran is presented as a guiding light to help people address life’s challenges, rather than a set of rigid commands. This flexible understanding of Islam, Abbadi noted, undermines extremist claims to authority over religion.

Training imams and promoting peaceful Islam

Key to this strategy is the Mohammed VI Institute for Training Imams and Female Guides, which equips religious leaders to counter extremist interpretations. By educating imams on inclusive and moderate religious perspectives, Morocco ensures that its faith leaders are well-prepared to advocate for peaceful coexistence.

Abbadi stressed that this program, in place for over two decades, has been conducted under the leadership of King Mohammed VI. Its consistent application has left no room for superficial solutions or extremist ideologies to take root.

A global example of peaceful Islam

Abbadi concluded by describing Morocco’s model as a practical and peaceful example of Islam’s ability to embrace human complexity. Through its balanced and inclusive approach, Morocco continues to demonstrate how education and cultural reform can protect society from extremism and promote harmony.
