Morocco emerges as a rising global hub for electric vehicle manufacturing
Morocco has strengthened its position as one of the world's emerging destinations for the electric vehicle (EV) industry, according to the World Investment Report 2026 published by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
The report highlights Morocco among a group of fast-growing economies attracting strategic investments in electric mobility and related supply chains, alongside countries such as Brazil, India, Saudi Arabia, and Thailand. It attributes the country's progress to long-term industrial policies that have helped create a competitive manufacturing ecosystem focused on exports and advanced technologies.
Over the past decade, Morocco has invested heavily in expanding its automotive industry through infrastructure development, investment incentives, and partnerships with international manufacturers. These efforts have enabled the country to become one of Africa's leading automotive production centers while positioning itself for the transition toward electric mobility.
One of the report's key examples is the planned development of a large-scale electric vehicle battery manufacturing facility in the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region. The project is expected to significantly increase production capacity, allowing Morocco to move beyond vehicle assembly and into battery cell manufacturing—one of the highest-value segments of the global EV supply chain.
The report also notes that Morocco continues to attract growing interest from international companies specializing in battery technology, automotive components, and clean energy solutions. These investments are expected to strengthen the country's role as a regional industrial platform serving European, African, and Middle Eastern markets.
According to UNCTAD, Morocco maintained solid foreign direct investment inflows during 2025, while the country's cumulative stock of foreign investment continued to expand. This performance reflects investor confidence in Morocco's stable business environment, strategic geographic location, and commitment to industrial modernization.
As global demand for electric vehicles accelerates, Morocco is positioning itself as a key player in the clean mobility sector. By combining industrial development, renewable energy potential, and advanced manufacturing capabilities, the country aims to become an increasingly important destination for sustainable automotive production and high-value technological investment.
