Morocco emerges as Africa’s top mining investment destination
Morocco has solidified its position as a leading destination for mining investment, ranking first in Africa and 18th globally in the 2024 Annual Survey of Mining Companies by Canada’s Fraser Institute. This ranking underscores Morocco’s competitive edge in mineral potential and government policies that favor mining exploration and development.
Strong global and regional performance
In the latest survey, Morocco outperformed African peers such as Botswana (20th), Zambia (28th), and Namibia (30th). The country also ranked 14th globally in the Best Practices Mineral Potential Index, which evaluates the attractiveness of a nation’s geology under ideal policy conditions.
Although Morocco’s Policy Perception Index score dropped by 15.69 points compared to 2023, placing it 28th out of 82 jurisdictions, its geological wealth and relatively stable mining policies continue to attract significant investment.
Consistent investor confidence
Morocco’s ranking on the overall investment index has shown stability and growth over the years, moving from 27th in 2023 to 18th in 2024. This consistent performance reflects sustained investor confidence in the country’s mining sector.
The Fraser Institute’s survey, conducted between August and December 2024, collected insights from 350 mining executives and managers. Respondents reported a cumulative $6 billion in exploration expenditures during the year, highlighting Morocco’s appeal as a mining investment hub.
Rich natural resources and favorable policies
Morocco’s geology boasts abundant resources, particularly phosphates and base metals, which are critical for industries worldwide. The Fraser Institute emphasized that jurisdictions with both rich mineral potential and supportive policies tend to attract more investment. Morocco’s combination of natural wealth and favorable regulations places it among the most attractive mining destinations globally.
This recognition not only reinforces Morocco’s position in Africa but also strengthens its standing on the global mining stage.
