Morocco enhances military capabilities with SpyX drone acquisition
Morocco is taking significant steps to modernize its military forces through the recent acquisition of the SpyX kamikaze drone from BlueBird Aero Systems, a subsidiary of Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). This move aligns with Morocco's ongoing efforts to strengthen defense ties with Israel, particularly since the normalization of relations in December 2020.
The SpyX drone, designed for reconnaissance and precision strike missions, boasts an impressive flight autonomy of 90 minutes and a range of 50 kilometers. Capable of reaching speeds exceeding 250 km/h, the drone is engineered to locate and neutralize targets with remarkable accuracy. Its high-resolution camera and advanced video tracking system facilitate guided attacks, while its 2.5 kg explosive payload can be tailored to various targets, including enemy personnel, light vehicles, and armored units.
Prior to the introduction of the SpyX, the Royal Armed Forces (FAR) of Morocco had already bolstered their capabilities with the acquisition of WanderB-VTOL and ThunderB-VTOL drones, which are compatible with the SpyX and effective in both attack and aerial surveillance missions. Following the defense pact signed in 2021 with Israel, Morocco has procured various drones, including 150 units of the WanderB and ThunderB models in 2022. According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), 11% of Israel's arms exports are directed toward Morocco, highlighting the deepening military collaboration between the two nations.
The introduction of suicide drones like the SpyX significantly enhances Morocco's military strength, potentially shifting the balance of power in the region. This development has raised concerns in neighboring Spain regarding Morocco's military capabilities. Additionally, voices within Morocco are calling for a reevaluation of diplomatic relations with Tel Aviv amid ongoing conflicts in Gaza. Nevertheless, Moroccan authorities continue to prioritize defense cooperation with Israel while also extending humanitarian aid to the Palestinian population.
