Morocco Launches MAD 11 Billion Urban Transport Modernization Initiative
Morocco has unveiled an ambitious MAD 11 billion investment program aimed at transforming urban transportation across the nation. The comprehensive initiative, announced by the Interior Ministry, will run from 2025 to 2029 and focuses on enhancing service quality throughout Moroccan communities.
The program encompasses a wide range of infrastructure improvements, including the acquisition of state-of-the-art buses equipped with modern passenger information systems and advanced ticketing capabilities. Additionally, the plan provides for the construction and renovation of essential facilities such as depots, bus stops, shelters, and specialized maintenance centers.
Funding for this large-scale modernization effort will be sourced through a partnership between Morocco's Urban and Interurban Road Transport Reform Support Fund (FRAT) and regional councils. The financial structure allocates one-third of the total investment (MAD 3.66 billion) to regional councils, while the Ministry of the Interior will provide the remaining two-thirds (MAD 7.32 billion).
To maximize the program's effectiveness, delegating authorities will receive comprehensive support, including specialized training for officials and local development companies. This support system aims to ensure the delivery of premium services while maintaining financial equilibrium in contracts and strengthening monitoring capabilities.
In a significant move to bolster interinstitutional cooperation, the Ministries of the Interior and Economy and Finance have increased their annual contribution to the FRAT fund by MAD 500 million, bringing the total to MAD 3 billion. This enhancement demonstrates the government's commitment to improving urban mobility infrastructure and services across Morocco.
