Morocco reiterates commitment to two-state solution at UN conference
Morocco, represented by Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch, reaffirmed its unwavering support for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state during a high-level international conference held Monday in New York. The event, focused on the peaceful resolution of the Palestinian question, was convened on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
Morocco’s steadfast stance on Poalestine
Accompanied by Minister of Freign Affairs Nasser Bourita and Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Omar Hilale, Akhannouch underscored Rabat’s long-standing diplomatic efforts and solidarity with Palestine. Morocco has consistently advocated for a two-state solution as the foundation for a just and lasting peace in the region.
The conference aimed to rally international support for the two-state solution and address the ongoing challenges to its implementation. French President Emmanuel Macron and Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud co-chaired the meeting, which also featured the participation of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock.
France and other allies recognize Palestinian statehood
In a groundbreaking announcement during the conference, French President Emmanuel Macron declared France’s official recognition of the State of Palestine. Macron emphasized that this decision represents both a moral obligation and a political necessity amid escalating violence in Gaza.
His statement followed similar moves by the UK, Canada, and Australia, which recently acknowledged Palestinian statehood. While these countries have historically supported Israel, their shift reflects growing global pressure to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and reconsider their positions on Palestinian self-determination.
Mounting international pressure
Western nations, long seen as Israel’s strongest diplomatic and military allies, are facing increased scrutiny as the conflict in Gaza intensifies. The widespread destruction and displacement in Palestinian territories have prompted a reassessment of Israel’s actions and a renewed focus on implementing the two-state solution as a pathway to peace.
