Schools across the province of Essaouira will be closed on Friday and Saturday as a precautionary measure due to adverse weather conditions, local education authorities announced.

The Provincial Directorate of the Ministry of National Education, Preschool and Sports said the temporary suspension of classes applies to all public and private educational institutions in the province. The decision follows the latest weather alert issued by the General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM).

According to the authorities, the measure aims to ensure the safety of students as well as teaching and administrative staff. It was taken in line with the recommendations of the provincial monitoring committee and in close coordination with local authorities and other stakeholders.

The DGM has issued a red-level weather alert, forecasting heavy rainfall of between 80 and 120 millimeters, particularly in mountainous areas. The alert is valid from Friday at 5:00 p.m. until Saturday at 6:00 p.m. for the provinces of Agadir Ida-Outanane, Taroudant and Essaouira.
