Morocco secures $50 million investment from Catalan firms

The Moroccan government has finalized four significant investment agreements with Catalan companies, totaling MAD 500 million ($50 million) and promising the creation of over 700 direct jobs. This initiative marks a vital progression in enhancing economic relations between Morocco and Spain.

High-level signing ceremony

Karim Zidane, Morocco’s deputy minister for investment, presided over the signing ceremony in Rabat, with Josep Sánchez Llibre, president of Foment del Treball, leading the Catalan delegation. The investments will focus on four strategic sectors: automotive manufacturing, waste recovery, industrial packaging, and construction materials.

These sectors highlight Morocco’s increasing attractiveness as an investment destination and its capacity to translate economic partnerships into job-generating projects.

Morocco positions itself as a regional hub

Zidane emphasized that these initiatives align with King Mohammed VI’s vision of establishing Morocco as a competitive industrial and economic hub in Africa and the Mediterranean region. He pointed out three key improvements that facilitate investment: digital procedures, streamlined administration, and enhanced Regional Investment Centers (CRIs).

Catalonia plans bigger future investment

Sánchez Llibre praised the warm reception from Moroccan officials and expressed intentions for larger future investments. He stated, “These first projects are just the beginning of a larger, long-term presence in Morocco,” adding that his delegation will return within a year with around twenty Catalan companies.

Spain-Morocco strengthened economic partnership

Spanish Ambassador to Rabat Enrique Ojeda Vila attended the ceremony, celebrating the strong economic partnership between Morocco and Spain. He noted that both countries are each other's primary economic partners, underscored by historical and strategic ties. Adil Rais, co-president of the Morocco-Spain Economic Council (CEMAES), affirmed that these agreements exemplify the commitment to establishing a robust investment axis, aiming for Spain to become Morocco’s largest foreign investor.

Building on previous success

This signing ceremony continues the bilateral economic promotion efforts under the “Morocco Now” initiative. Previous activities include roadshows in Barcelona in January 2024 and Madrid in April 2025, as well as the inaugural visit from a Catalan delegation in June 2024. These new investments illustrate Morocco’s success in attracting international partners and transforming diplomatic relations into tangible economic opportunities that benefit both nations’ workers and businesses.
