Morocco strengthens Mediterranean security ties through Cernia 2025 exercise
Morocco participated as an observer in the Cernia 2025 international search and rescue exercise held in the Balearic Islands, underscoring its growing involvement in regional security cooperation alongside NATO allies. The large-scale simulation tested emergency coordination mechanisms between air and maritime agencies across different countries.
According to Spain’s Ministry of Defense, the exercise was organized by the Aeronautical Rescue Coordination Center (ARCC) based in Palma, part of Wing 49 of the Spanish Air and Space Force. Teams from Spain and Italy conducted rescue missions, while France and Morocco observed the drills. The operation aimed to assess the integration and response capacity of participating units during complex emergency scenarios.
Spain deployed two CN-235 aircraft, supported by the Military Emergency Unit (UME), the Civil Guard, coastal patrol units, and the Special Underwater Activities Group (GEAS). Italy contributed aircraft from the Aeronautica Militare and Coast Guard, while Spanish customs surveillance boats participated in the maritime search phases.
The exercise unfolded in two main stages across Menorca. Sea operations, designated SAMAR, were held to the east of the island, while land-based simulations, codenamed SATER, took place in Es Mercadal and San Luis. Coordination and evaluation meetings were hosted at the Son San Juan Air Base and Mahón airport. Oversight was managed by the ARCC Palma with evaluation by SAR Headquarters teams.
Morocco’s participation reflects its growing collaboration with Mediterranean allies. The joint activities build upon recent bilateral operations between Moroccan and Spanish naval forces under NATO’s SeaGuardian mission, which focused on maritime surveillance and countering regional threats in the Strait of Gibraltar. Warships Reina Sofía and Tarik Ben Ziyad took part in these efforts, further strengthening maritime interoperability.
Defense officials stated that Cernia 2025 validated rescue coordination procedures and reinforced trust among participating partners. The exercise showcased how joint training enhances operational readiness and ensures rapid, efficient responses to emergencies in Mediterranean waters. As a key non-NATO ally, Morocco continues expanding its role in international defense initiatives and regional stability frameworks.
