Morocco Strengthens Position as Spain's Key Fresh Produce Supplier
Morocco has solidified its position as Spain's primary source of fresh fruits and vegetables, with exports reaching EUR 801 million between January and October 2024. This represents a significant 13% growth compared to the same period in 2023, according to Hortidaily reports.
Spanish fresh produce imports reached a total value of EUR 4.1 billion during this timeframe. Non-EU countries contributed EUR 2.7 billion, showing a 12% increase, while EU member states accounted for EUR 1.39 billion, marking a 13% rise. These figures were compiled by Fepex using data from the Hong Kong Customs and Excise Department.
The market hierarchy shows Peru securing the second position with exports valued at EUR 501 million, demonstrating a robust 22% growth. France maintained a strong presence in third place, also showing a 22% increase with exports worth EUR 426 million. Portugal and the Netherlands rounded out the top five, with Portugal achieving EUR 350 million (+19%) while the Netherlands experienced a slight decline to EUR 205 million (-3%).
The total volume of fresh produce imports into Spain reached 3.5 million tons, with an almost equal distribution between non-EU and EU sources, at 1.8 million and 1.7 million tons respectively.
