Morocco has announced the development of its ambitious “Agricultural Vision 2050,” a forward-looking strategy designed to transform the nation’s agricultural sector over the next three decades. Building on the current Generation Green framework, the new roadmap aims to address climate challenges, bolster food security, and enhance sustainability.

Scheduled to begin with a comprehensive study in November, this strategic initiative will be backed by a budget of nearly MAD 10 million ($1 million). The study will serve as the foundation for Morocco’s post-2030 agricultural strategy, evaluating progress under the Generation Green framework and identifying key areas for future development.

Innovations driving the vision

The Agricultural Vision 2050 emphasizes modernization and sustainability. Key components include optimizing soil and water resources, integrating non-conventional water sources, adopting cutting-edge agritech, modernizing supply chains, and improving food safety and financing access. These measures aim to strengthen Morocco’s food sovereignty while addressing demographic pressures and the growing impact of climate change.

Special attention will be given to water resources, including surface and groundwater, as well as non-conventional sources such as treated wastewater. The study will analyze irrigation potential and assess the suitability of water resources for agricultural use across regions and hydraulic basins.

Climate resilience and regional planning

The upcoming study will also focus on climate resilience, evaluating the impact of climate change on hydroclimatic conditions, water needs, and agricultural yields for 2035, 2040, and 2050. It will map soil potential, assess land-use changes, and explore the development of irrigable areas, aligning with strategic documents such as Morocco’s National Water Plan and IPCC reports.

By leveraging data-driven insights, the Agricultural Vision 2050 aims to create a resilient, sustainable agricultural system capable of adapting to both environmental and economic challenges.

A roadmap for the future

This visionary approach reflects Morocco’s commitment to balancing technological advancement with sustainability. As the country positions itself as a leader in innovative agricultural practices, the Agricultural Vision 2050 represents a major step toward ensuring food security, economic growth, and environmental stewardship for future generations.
