Morocco’s Domestic Tourism: A Bold Plan to Break Seasonal Barriers
Morocco’s domestic tourism sector is experiencing a significant boost, with over 30 million overnight stays recorded recently, according to Tourism Minister Fatim-Zahra Ammor. Speaking to Parliament, Ammor described Moroccan tourists as the sector’s “top clients,” emphasizing their importance in driving employment, local development, and regional growth.
Despite these achievements, the industry faces a critical challenge: seasonal demand. The summer season sees a sharp rise in tourist activity, creating a mismatch between supply and demand. Ammor reassured stakeholders that the government is implementing strategies to combat this imbalance, placing domestic tourism at the heart of its broader sectoral vision.
Year-Round Tourism Strategy Unveiled
To sustain tourism activity throughout the year, the ministry has introduced a fresh approach that prioritizes two key areas: seaside tourism and nature expeditions. These focus areas aim to diversify and expand offerings to meet the needs of Moroccan travelers. The strategy incorporates five pivotal steps:
Affordable, Family-Friendly Accommodations: Increasing accessible lodging options, including cost-effective home-sharing arrangements, to cater to diverse budgets.
Enhanced Air Travel Links: Establishing quicker air connections between cities to make remote destinations more accessible.
Development of Major Tourist Attractions: New projects such as Azilal’s DinoParc, eco-resorts in Oukaïmeden and Khénifra, and natural parks in Ifrane, Toubkal, and Souss-Massa are set to redefine the tourism landscape.
National Media Campaign: The launch of the “Netla9aw f’bladna” campaign (“Let’s Meet in Our Country”) aims to inspire Moroccans to explore their homeland and discover its hidden treasures.
Training Local Guides: Special programs will equip guides with skills for city tours, nature trails, and outdoor adventures, enhancing the overall tourist experience.
Momentum in International Tourism
Beyond domestic efforts, Morocco’s 2023-2026 tourism roadmap has begun yielding impressive results on the international stage. By September 2023, the country welcomed over 13 million foreign tourists, a 2-million increase from the previous year.
Tourism revenues have soared, reaching MAD 17 billion ($1.74 billion) by August 2024, reflecting a 20% year-on-year growth. In the first eight months of 2024, Morocco earned over $7.83 billion from the sector, with hotels recording more than 15.83 million overnight stays.
The government’s ambitious goals include attracting 17.5 million visitors by 2026 and 26 million by 2030. To achieve this, Morocco plans to build world-class attractions, expand travel links, and promote its rich cultural heritage globally.
By addressing seasonal demand and enhancing travel experiences, Morocco is not only strengthening its domestic tourism sector but also positioning itself as a premier destination for both local and international travelers.
