Morocco's national railway sets ambitious passenger and revenue targets for 2025

Morocco's National Office of Railways (ONCF) has unveiled plans to achieve record-breaking numbers in 2025, targeting 57 million passengers and revenue exceeding $500 million (MAD 5 billion). The strategic blueprint aligns with Morocco's preparations for hosting major sporting events, including the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

During a board meeting chaired by Transport and Logistics Minister Abdessamad Kayouh, ONCF reviewed its 2024 performance and outlined future strategies. The rail operator reported significant achievements in 2024, with passenger numbers reaching 55 million, marking a 4% increase from 2023.

The high-speed Al Boraq service demonstrated particular success, serving over 5.5 million passengers and recording a 5% year-over-year growth. Freight operations also experienced substantial expansion, with 20 million tons of goods transported, representing a 17% increase from 2023, despite global economic challenges.

ONCF's financial performance remained strong, with 2024 revenue projected to exceed $465 million (MAD 4.7 billion). The office anticipates an EBITDA of $180 million (MAD 1.8 billion), showing a 9% improvement from 2023, reflecting operational efficiency despite rising costs.

Looking ahead to 2025, ONCF projects continued growth with passenger numbers expected to reach 57 million, while freight operations aim to handle 21 million tons of goods. Revenue forecasts suggest a 6% increase compared to 2024, surpassing the $500 million mark.

Beyond 2025, ONCF has outlined a comprehensive development plan through 2030, focusing on expanding the high-speed rail network to Marrakech, implementing regional express services, acquiring new rolling stock, and developing modern station infrastructure. These initiatives aim to strengthen rail transportation as a cornerstone of sustainable mobility in Morocco.

The strategic investments and expansion plans reflect ONCF's commitment to enhancing Morocco's transportation infrastructure while supporting the country's economic development goals and sustainable transportation initiatives.
