Morocco's Russian Grain Imports Surge Ninefold in 2024

Morocco has emerged as a major purchaser of Russian grain through the West Siberian Railway (WSR), with imports reaching 514,000 tons in 2024—nearly nine times the volume recorded in 2023, according to African Initiative.

WSR has achieved remarkable growth in its grain export operations, setting a new daily transportation record of 302 rail cars within 24 hours in 2024, surpassing its previous benchmark from 2021. This milestone demonstrates the railway's enhanced logistical capabilities and its ability to meet rising demand.

The surge in Moroccan imports reflects broader changes in global agricultural trade patterns. As one of North Africa's primary grain importers, Morocco has strategically diversified its supply sources amid global market uncertainties stemming from political tensions, climate change, and production fluctuations.

Eduard Zernin, Chairperson of the Union of Grain Exporters, noted that Morocco has become a priority market for Russian wheat exports. Since the start of the 2024-2025 season, Russian wheat shipments to Morocco have exceeded 650,000 metric tons, marking a substantial increase from the previous year. This growth has propelled Morocco into the ranks of the world's top ten wheat buyers.

The strong demand for Russian wheat from July through October 2024 has established Morocco as a key grain purchaser in North Africa. This development aligns with Russia's broader strategy to strengthen its economic presence in the Middle East and North Africa, with Morocco playing a central role in this expansion.

This shift in trade dynamics represents part of Russia's comprehensive approach to deepen commercial relationships with African and Arab nations, particularly as it seeks to diversify its export markets beyond Europe. By establishing itself as a dependable agricultural supplier, Russia aims to ensure consistent food supply to international partners while expanding its influence across Africa and the Middle East.
