Portugal observed a day of national mourning on Thursday following a deadly derailment of the iconic Gloria funicular in Lisbon, which left at least 15 people dead and 18 injured in one of the city’s most tourist-heavy neighborhoods.

The Portuguese judiciary has launched an investigation after the historic funicular, connecting Rossio Square with the Bairro Alto and Principe Real districts, overturned. The causes of the accident are not yet known.

Social media footage showed the funicular completely disassembled against a wall in a cloud of smoke, apparently failing to take the bend at the bottom of the street. Another funicular stopped a few meters below, while bystanders watched in shock.

“All victims were recovered from the wreckage shortly after 6:00 p.m. local time,” said Tiago Augusto, head of medical emergency services, noting that some of the victims were foreigners, though their nationalities were not disclosed.

The funicular, with a capacity of about forty passengers, is a popular transport method for tourists visiting the Portuguese capital.
