New ship to strengthen maritime connection between Marseille and Tangier Med
The maritime company La Méridionale has announced the launch of a new ship to enhance services between the ports of Marseille and Tangier Med, as part of the "Marhaba" operation aimed at facilitating travel for Moroccan expatriates.
The company revealed in a statement on March 7th that the ferry Normandie will be renamed Massalia and will begin operations on this route in June 2025. The new name was chosen by the company’s employees, inspired by the Greek roots of the city of Marseille.
However, the decision has sparked controversy. The Corsica Workers’ Union (STC) voiced its opposition through an official letter, calling the name change an "unacceptable insult" for not referencing Corsica, as reported by the French newspaper Provence.
Massalia will replace the Pelagos, which was recently sold, allowing for an increase in capacity on the Marseille-Tangier Med route. The new ferry will offer 156 additional cabins compared to its predecessor.
Meanwhile, the ferry Calisti will temporarily handle services until the end of May 2025, after which the Normandie will be replaced by the Guillaume de Normandy on the route between Caen, Weymouth, and Portsmouth, operated by Brittany Ferries.
