Niamey – The government of Niger has announced the creation of a new national airline, Niger Air International, as part of its strategy to improve domestic and international connectivity and to support socio-economic development.

The decision, adopted during a Council of Ministers meeting on Thursday, establishes the airline as a mixed-economy company, with most of the capital held by the state and other public entities, though private investors are also invited to participate.

According to the government statement, the new carrier aims to end the country’s isolation by ensuring reliable air links both within Niger and abroad. Officials see the initiative as a strategic tool to promote regional integration and economic growth.

The announcement comes after the collapse of Niger’s previous national airline, which suspended operations in November 2022 due to security concerns. In July 2025, Niger sought Morocco’s support in developing the new company, underscoring the importance Niamey places on building a sovereign and sustainable air transport sector.

By strengthening its aviation sector, Niger hopes to position itself as a key hub in the Sahel, while providing its citizens with better access to regional and international destinations.
