Nigeria harnesses GITEX to drive tech innovation and policy reform
Nigeria is cementing its position as a leading digital powerhouse in Africa through a combination of policy advancements, global collaborations, and a thriving startup ecosystem. With its first edition of GITEX NIGERIA set to take place from September 1-4 in Abuja and Lagos, the nation is showcasing its commitment to leveraging technology for economic growth and innovation.
A platform for digital transformation
GITEX NIGERIA 2025 marks a pivotal moment in the country’s ambition to transform its economy, aiming to reach a $1 trillion valuation by 2030. Organized by KAOUN International, the global entity behind GITEX, the event is endorsed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, and the Lagos state government.
The event opens in Abuja with the Government Leadership & AI Summit on September 1, bringing together policymakers, investors, and tech visionaries to discuss artificial intelligence (AI) and the expansion of digital infrastructure. From September 3-4, Lagos will host the Tech Expo & Future Economy Conference and the Startup Festival, creating West Africa’s largest convergence of innovators and industry leaders.
Hon. Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, emphasized Nigeria’s determination to transition from technology consumers to solution producers: “Our success in AI and digital development will define Nigeria’s role in the global economy. GITEX NIGERIA is a chance to showcase our talent and innovation to the world.”
Lagos as a digital hub
Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital, is central to the nation’s digital ambitions. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu described the city as Africa’s innovation hub, stating, “We aim to make Lagos the preferred destination for digital solutions on the continent. GITEX NIGERIA will place our city at the forefront of Africa’s digital future.”
The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) also highlighted the event’s significance. Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, NITDA’s Director General, called GITEX NIGERIA a “catalyst for Africa’s technology growth,” focusing on promoting AI adoption, scalable infrastructure, and international competitiveness.
Policy and investment as growth drivers
Nigeria’s digital transformation is rooted in strategic reforms aimed at reducing its dependence on oil revenues. By diversifying into agriculture, manufacturing, services, and technology, the government seeks to foster innovation and attract foreign direct investment.
Events like GITEX NIGERIA play a crucial role in advancing these goals by uniting policymakers, entrepreneurs, and global stakeholders to accelerate digital transformation. This initiative reflects the government’s ambition to balance rapid economic growth with technological sovereignty.
A continental vision for innovation
GITEX NIGERIA builds on the success of similar events such as GITEX Africa Morocco, held earlier this year. The Moroccan edition brought together over 1,500 exhibitors and 700 startups from around the world, facilitating partnerships in AI, fintech, cybersecurity, and digital health.
As Nigeria positions itself as a continental leader in technology, the inaugural GITEX NIGERIA underscores the nation’s readiness to harness digital innovation for socio-economic transformation. Through deliberate policy-making, investment incentives, and international collaborations, Nigeria is unlocking its potential as a hub for tech-driven growth in Africa.
