Off-duty FDNY firefighter dies in motorcycle crash on FDR Drive
An off-duty FDNY firefighter lost his life early Thursday morning in a tragic motorcycle accident on Manhattan's FDR Drive. The firefighter, identified as 31-year-old Matthew Goicochea, was thrown from his motorcycle and fatally struck by a vehicle that fled the scene, according to police.
Fatal crash on FDR Drive
The incident occurred just before 4 a.m. near West 25th Street, as Goicochea was riding northbound. Police reported that he "failed to navigate the roadway," causing him to fall off the motorcycle.
As he lay on the roadway, an unidentified vehicle struck him and left the scene without stopping, authorities said. Goicochea sustained severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
A firefighter remembered
Goicochea joined the FDNY in 2022 and had already distinguished himself in his short time with the department. He was awarded the prestigious Thomas Wylie Medal in 2024 for saving an unconscious victim from a fire in the Bronx.
The crash is under investigation, and police are seeking the driver of the vehicle involved.
