Ontario Leads Canada in Immigrant Retention Rates
Ontario has recorded the highest immigrant retention rate in Canada, according to a recent report by Statistics Canada. In 2022, the province saw an impressive retention rate of 94.6% for new immigrants, setting a notable standard for other regions in the country.
By comparison, Quebec's retention rate stood at 93.4% in 2022, a significant improvement from 84.6% in 2019. This positive trend indicates a growing ability of the province to retain newcomers and integrate them into its communities and economy.
However, not all provinces experienced similar success. Newfoundland and Labrador, along with Nova Scotia, saw declines in their immigrant retention rates, signaling potential challenges in these regions' efforts to support and retain new residents.
The report also highlighted the overall growth in Canada's population of non-permanent residents, which reached 3,049,277 as of October 1st. Despite this growth, Statistics Canada noted a slowdown in the increase of non-permanent residents, with the net rise in the third quarter of the year being the smallest since 2015, excluding the third quarter of 2020. This deceleration is largely attributed to a decrease in the number of international students arriving in Canada, which has been a significant factor in the overall immigration trend.
As Canada continues to evolve as a top destination for immigrants, the variations in retention rates across provinces underscore the importance of tailored strategies to help newcomers settle and thrive in their new communities.
