Ounahi's uncertain future: Marseille sidelines midfielder as transfer looms
Moroccan footballer Azzedine Ounahi appears destined for a summer departure from Marseille after being excluded from Roberto De Zerbi’s first-team plans. The 24-year-old midfielder, under contract until 2027, has been relegated to the reserves alongside five other players as the Ligue 1 club reshapes its squad for the 2025–26 season.
Ounahi, who spent last season on loan at Panathinaikos, impressed with five goals and seven assists, earning the Greek club’s Player of the Season accolade. Panathinaikos is eager to bring him back and has increased its offer to €9 million, though Marseille is holding firm at €12 million.
Meanwhile, Spartak Moscow reportedly matched Marseille’s asking price and offered a lucrative salary package. Ounahi declined the offer, citing concerns over Russia’s ongoing conflict in Ukraine and its exclusion from European football competitions.
Since joining Marseille in January 2023 following a standout performance at the Qatar World Cup, Ounahi has struggled to secure a significant role at the club. His exclusion from the first team underscores the likelihood of a transfer, with the player reportedly considering other options as the transfer window progresses.
The sidelining of Ounahi comes as part of broader changes at Marseille, with Rubén Blanco, Ismaël Koné, Simon Ngapandouetnbu, Bamo Meïté, and François Mughe also training with the reserves. The club is expected to facilitate exits for all six players ahead of the new season.
