Over 1,000 Confirmed Dead in 7.7 Magnitude Earthquake in Myanmar
A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, resulting in over 1,000 fatalities and countless injuries. Rescue operations are ongoing as officials warn that the death toll may continue to rise.
As of Saturday, Myanmar’s military-led government reported that at least 1,002 individuals have died, 2,376 have sustained injuries, and 30 are still unaccounted for. Authorities are conducting detailed assessments, which suggest that the final toll could be even higher. In light of the devastation, a state of emergency has been declared across six regions, and the government has issued a call for international humanitarian assistance.
The earthquake's effects have extended beyond Myanmar, with tremors causing damage in neighboring Bangladesh, China, and even reaching Vietnam. Several countries have responded by deploying rescue teams to aid in recovery efforts. Notably, China has pledged 100 million yuan (approximately $13.77 million) in emergency aid, aimed at providing tents, blankets, medical supplies, food, water, and other essential relief materials.
Striking midday on Friday, the earthquake unleashed massive destruction across Myanmar, leading to collapsed buildings, damaged roads, and broken bridges. A dam also burst as aftershocks followed, with one measuring 6.4 in magnitude, further compounding the damage.
In neighboring Thailand, the quake affected the greater Bangkok area, which is home to around 17 million residents. Authorities have confirmed nine deaths, 30 injuries, and over 45 individuals still missing, many of whom were trapped under the rubble of a construction site near the bustling Chatuchak market.
Myanmar, already grappling with a severe humanitarian crisis stemming from the civil conflict that erupted following the 2021 military coup that ousted the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi, now faces additional challenges in delivering aid to those affected by the earthquake. Ongoing clashes between military forces and entrenched militias, along with newly formed pro-democracy groups, have rendered movement across the country perilous.
Reports indicate that military operations have persisted in the border regions of the heavily impacted Mandalay state, with residents alleging that they have yet to receive any aid from the military, according to interviews conducted by Reuters.
