Peru: Three killed in attempted attack on gold mine
Three people were killed during an attempted attack on a gold mine in northern Peru on New Year’s Eve, according to the public prosecutor’s office in the province of Pataz, an area affected by rising violence linked to mining activities.
Local authorities reported that an armed group tried to enter a mining site shortly before midnight but was stopped at the entrance by private security guards. The bodies of three individuals were later found near the Papagayo mine, the prosecutor’s office said.
Pataz, located around 900 kilometers north of Lima, has been under a state of emergency since early 2024 due to an escalation of violence associated with illegal mining and competition over gold resources. The surge in global gold prices has intensified tensions in the region.
Peru is among the world’s leading gold producers and ranks second in Latin America. However, officials note that a significant portion of mining activity remains informal or illegal, contributing to insecurity in several regions.
