Youth unrest continues to grow in Peru, as violent clashes broke out overnight Saturday to Sunday in Lima, the nation’s capital, between protesters and police forces. Many demonstrators, some partially masked, gathered and lifted protective barriers around the Congress building in response to police shields.

The mobilization was initiated by an anti-government collective called “Generations Z”, whose symbol is the flag from the Japanese anime One Piece. This flag has become a symbol of youth resistance in protests across countries from Nepal to Indonesia.

The unrest has been fueled for months by rising crime and extortion cases. Surveys indicate that Peruvians aged 18-35 view the government and the majority-conservative Congress as corrupt.

The protests began over a controversial pension reform that would have required independent workers to contribute to private pension funds and restricted withdrawals. Although the government reversed the policy, demonstrations continued, reflecting broader frustration with political corruption and impunity.

On Saturday, at least 14 people, including three journalists, were injured, while 12 police officers were also hurt. Authorities defended the use of force as “legitimate” and “in accordance with the law.”
