A petition calling for the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-final between France and Spain to be replayed has attracted significant public attention after gathering more than 50,000 signatures within hours of the match.

The campaign was launched by French supporters who believe that a controversial refereeing decision had a decisive impact on the outcome of the game. Their main complaint centers on the penalty awarded to Spain, with some fans arguing that the attacking move should have been stopped because of an alleged handball before the foul was given.

According to the petition's organizers, the disputed incident changed the momentum of the match and influenced the final result. They argue that key officiating decisions should be reviewed carefully in matches of such importance to ensure fairness and sporting integrity.

France head coach Didier Deschamps also expressed disappointment with the officiating after the match, questioning whether the referee's performance met the standards expected for a World Cup semi-final. His comments added to the debate already taking place among supporters and football analysts.

Despite the growing support for the petition, football regulations leave virtually no possibility of replaying a match solely because of disputed refereeing decisions. Under FIFA's Laws of the Game, results are generally considered final unless exceptional administrative circumstances arise, making a replay in this case highly unlikely.

Spain's victory therefore remains officially confirmed, securing the team's place in the World Cup final, where it will face Argentina. Meanwhile, France will shift its attention to the third-place playoff against England, aiming to finish the tournament on a positive note.

The controversy has once again highlighted the ongoing discussion surrounding refereeing standards and the use of technology in football's biggest competitions. While systems such as VAR have reduced many officiating errors, contentious decisions continue to generate debate among players, coaches, and supporters around the world.
