A police officer was killed and another wounded during an exchange of fire between security forces and armed men in southeastern Iran, according to local media reports on Saturday.

The incident took place in Sistan-Baluchestan, one of Iran’s poorest provinces, which has long been the scene of recurring clashes involving security forces, Baluch insurgents, radical Sunni groups, and drug traffickers.

“During a confrontation between police in Iranshahr and armed assailants, one officer was injured and another killed,” reported Fars news agency, citing local police sources. It added that the attackers were wounded, fled the scene, and are currently being pursued by the authorities.

Isna news agency also confirmed the clash.

Sistan-Baluchestan is home to a large Baluch minority, predominantly Sunni Muslims in a country where Shiism is dominant. In recent years, the Sunni extremist group Jaish al-Adl, based in Pakistan, has carried out several deadly attacks against Iranian security forces. Just last week, a similar assault attributed to the group claimed the life of another officer in the same region, according to local media.
