Portuguese health authorities confirmed 29 mpox cases in the past three months, warning of a possible increase in transmission though no new epidemic peak has been detected.

According to the Directorate-General of Health (DGS) and the National Health Institute Dr. Ricardo Jorge (INSA), 10 cases were reported in August, three in September, and 16 in October.

“In recent weeks, an increase in the number of cases has been observed, suggesting a possible intensification of transmission, although there is still no evidence of a new epidemic peak,” the institutions told public broadcaster RTP.

The agencies highlighted that the rise in October, compared with the monthly average of around 11 cases, must still be interpreted carefully as laboratory confirmations continue.

In an October report, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned that all known strains of the mpox virus remain in circulation and that a newly identified clade, known as clade Ib, has spread beyond Africa, raising concerns about continued community transmission if outbreaks are not quickly contained.
