A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of the Philippines early Friday, prompting authorities to issue a tsunami warning and urge coastal residents to move to higher ground.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the tremor occurred around 20 kilometers off the coast of Manay, on the southern island of Mindanao, at 9:43 a.m. local time. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) warned that “a destructive tsunami is expected,” with waves capable of endangering lives along the country’s eastern shores.

Residents in affected coastal areas were advised to evacuate immediately toward higher ground or move further inland. As of now, no casualties or major damage have been reported, but authorities remain on high alert for aftershocks.

The quake comes just eleven days after another strong tremor struck the region, underscoring the seismic vulnerability of the archipelago, which lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire — one of the most active seismic zones in the world.
