President Aoun urges CDR to resist political, partisan, and religious interference
Baabda, July 16, 2025 – Lebanese President Joseph Aoun called on the newly appointed members of the Council for Development and Reconstruction (CDR) to operate with full independence and avoid any form of political, partisan, or religious influence in their mission.
During a meeting at the Presidential Palace in Baabda, President Aoun addressed the new CDR leadership, including its president Mohammad Ali Kabbani, vice-presidents Dr. Youssef Karam and Ibrahim Chahrour, Secretary General Ghassan Khairallah, and members Houssam Itani, Firas Abou Diab, and Georgio Klass.
He encouraged them to "act in accordance with their conscience" and emphasized that they should not try to please any political faction. “The challenges we face are significant, but nothing is impossible,” Aoun stated. “We cannot afford to lose time. Every moment matters, and the international community is closely watching our progress.”
President Aoun also insisted on the importance of transparency and adherence to the law, urging the council to stay clear of misinformation and to prioritize the nation's interests. He tasked the CDR with revitalizing key stalled projects, particularly frozen loan programs, in light of the country's ongoing crises.
In response, CDR President Kabbani expressed gratitude for the trust placed in the council, acknowledging the weight of the task ahead. “Our mission is not easy, but we are committed to doing our part to support Lebanon’s recovery and reform,” he said. He pledged to work with integrity and transparency, reaffirming the council's dedication to collective effort and national progress.
