Moldova’s pro-European Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) is ahead in Sunday’s parliamentary elections, according to preliminary results released by the Central Electoral Commission. With around 70% of ballots counted, PAS has secured about 44% of the vote, compared to 28% for the pro-Russian Patriotic Bloc.

The elections are seen as a decisive moment for the country’s future: whether to deepen ties with the European Union or shift back toward Moscow’s influence. More than half of eligible Moldovans cast their ballots, reflecting the high stakes of the vote in the small ex-Soviet republic of 2.4 million citizens and a large diaspora community.

The campaign has been marked by tension and mutual accusations of intimidation between rival camps. While polls had predicted a lead for PAS, the governing party has faced challenges due to Moldova’s ongoing economic struggles. President Maia Sandu, a strong advocate of closer relations with Brussels, has urged voters to support her party’s reform agenda.
