The French Army is preparing to take a major step in military innovation with Project Pendragon, a program designed to integrate artificial intelligence and robotics into its ground forces. According to General Pierre Schill, Chief of Staff of the French Army, the first unit of robots controlled by AI is expected to be unveiled next year.

General Schill has emphasized that automation must be linked to the level of conflict and remain fully auditable. Drawing lessons from the war in Ukraine, he noted that what was once projected for 2030 or 2035 will now arrive much sooner.

Pendragon follows other modernization efforts such as the Titan and Vulcain programs, reflecting the military’s determination to accelerate innovation without succumbing to technological hype. The initiative will be overseen by the Ministry’s Defense Artificial Intelligence Agency (Amiad), which ensures that new systems remain both effective and accountable.

This project represents not only a technological challenge but also a strategic test for the French Army as it adapts to the rapidly changing nature of warfare.
