Ramadan 2025: UK Muslims Prepare for Possible March 2 Start
Millions of Muslims in the United Kingdom are preparing for the holy month of Ramadan, but uncertainty surrounds its exact start date. The month of fasting, prayer, and reflection begins with the sighting of the new crescent moon, yet experts remain divided on whether it will be visible in the UK this year.
On Friday, February 28, moon-watchers across the country will turn their eyes to the evening sky in hopes of spotting the faint crescent. If it is sighted, Ramadan will commence on Saturday, March 1. If not, the holy month will begin the following day, on Sunday, March 2.
While some experts argue the moon will not be visible in the UK under any circumstances, local government astronomers suggest it may be possible to spot it using a telescope. This disagreement has left many awaiting confirmation with anticipation.
As soon as the start of Ramadan is declared, Muslim communities across the UK will begin observing the sacred practices of dawn-to-dusk fasting, nightly prayers, and acts of charity.
Islam is the second-largest religion in the United Kingdom, with approximately 6.5% of the population identifying as Muslim, according to the 2021 national census. This number is expected to grow in the coming years, reflecting the increasing significance of Ramadan to communities across the country.
